Plant Ambassadors, a pilot program to educate individuals from marginalized communities seeking new economic opportunities in ornamental horticulture. This program supports over 80 acres of formal public gardens within the 360-acre historical Olmsted conceived landscape of Essex County Branch Brook Park in the City of Newark, New Jersey. The largest park in the Essex County Park System was first envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. in 1867, before it was built in 1896.
Pathway to Progress
When ready, Plant Ambassadors will host regular recurring community education sessions to share what they learned and inspire others to plant ornamentals in their home gardens. Also, Plant Ambassadors will motivate residents to get involved in ongoing stewardship. Our education building, a living-learning space at the center of our formal gardens, will be the platform to launch our program. We aim to educate the greater community about the cultivation of ornamentals while creating economic opportunities for disadvantaged populations.
Plant Ambassadors as a program will nurture and inspire the human spirit of a select group of individuals who may otherwise feel defeated. As an extension of the ornamental horticulture learning opportunities presented to program participants, hundreds of community members will benefit from the knowledge they share with others.
