The surrounding cities of Essex County Branch Brook Park are densely populated and highly modified ecosystems, where plants and animals provide important ecosystem services to neighboring residents. Birds, in particular, play an essential role in the wellbeing of others. Researchers found that the presence of birds significantly contributes to people’s mental health and self-rated wellbeing.

Essex County Branch Brook Park is an important bird habitat in an urban area, providing food and nesting places. At the regional scale, Branch Brook Park forms a habitat island in a built-up area, which connects with other vegetation patches and constitute a “habitat network”. Furthermore, parks in cities along the major migratory bird flyways are important stopover places for migrant birds.
